The next morning I was up bright and early to get ahead of Jeff and Mike, who were going to follow me down to the main road. I also unloaded most of my gear on to their truck for the ride down.

I didn’t take pictures on the way down, because all I wanted to do was make it to the pavement. I was feeling pretty good now that I knew what to expect and had a safety net behind me. Upon passing the house with the deadhorse, I remember thinking I was in the homestretch. I just had to hit the gas through the sand before hitting pavement again. Well, I hit it, but not the pavement….

I got my front tire caught in some deep sand and next thing I know the handlebars were in my chest and I was sitting on the side of the road.

Fortunately my friends were behind me. They pushed the bike behind some bushes and then drove me to an Ensenada hospital. In Ensenada we discovered that hospitals do not necessarily have strechers and they are using 20 year old wheelchairs. I got into the wheelchair with excruciating pain only to be treated to a rollercoaster ride over rough sidewalks and through the hospital.

A look at the x-ray revealed a broken ankle and a spiral fracture of the tibia that ran up my leg. It looked like surgery would be needed so I was placed back in the truck for a ride up to San Diego. I was in Sharp Memorial before 6pm. I really can’t thank those guys enough for everything they did for me.
