Heading out of Eureka I was looking forward to getting to Ferndale, CA early because this is the spot of which the photographer Harold Pheiffer had told me to visit.

Hard to read in the photo but the sign explains that I have reached the end of the road and had to turn around.

So, I headed back to Ferndale and had lunch in this too cute little town.

I had started Rt 1 and so began a continuous stream of sharp turns with no straights to rest or realign the bike for the next turn. It was exhausting to muscle the fully loaded bike through the turns. I was ready to call it a day after and pulling into the town of Fort Bragg I starting studying the map at the local gas station.

A big guy approaches me at a gas station and starts giving me the third degree about my bike. He had met the Stiking Viking and now was itching to buy his own F650. He ended up inviting me to camp on his front lawn when I told him I needed to get to find a campground. Oh, his front yard sits on the California coastline. I couldn’t believe it. I ended up having dinner with the family, watching a movie and then camping with the family dog. This vicious looking dog had the heart of a toy poodle. He almost knocked me over as he leaned on me looking for a good petting.

I haven’t seen so many stars in a long time that night. It was a little weird to spend the evening in a nice cosy home with a family and then go back to my tent to sleep.
